Scholling is compulsory between the ages of five and sixteen, although many children attend nursery schools at an earlier age and many also remain at the secondary school until they are eighteen.
About a third of young people recieve some form of post-school education and about one in seven go on to full-time higher education. Overall responsability for all aspects of education in Britain lies with central government although the day-to-day running of schools rests with local authorities who employ teachers, provide and maintain buildings and supply equipment and materials.
Universities, polytechnics and majority of colleges and institutes of higher education are autonomous, self-governing institutions receiving government funding through the Central Funding Council and the Research Councils.
